What is psychotherapy and what are the different types of therapy?
Psychotherapy is most easily described as “talk therapy”. It involves open communication between therapist and client mutually working together.
Through psychotherapy sessions one can come to:
-
improve to understand oneself better,
-
learn how to reduce symptoms of distress,
-
learn healthy ways of coping, and
-
learn how to improve communication in relationships.
What should I expect from my consultation?
In the first consultation we will ask your personal and health history, current problems, stressors and support systems. During a session, we may use a form of talk therapy or have you do an exercise to help you change your mindset, such as writing down your reactions to certain maladaptive thoughts, evaluating external evidence, and considering other possible, realistic ways of thinking in non-extreme ways about a situation that causes you distress.
Is psychotherapy covered by extended health care?
Many private insurance or extended health benefits have coverage for counselling, therapy, or psychotherapy. Our therapist is a psychotherapist - please ensure this is a category within your plan.
Do I need a referral to book with a psychotherapist?
No, you do not need a referral from your family doctor to book an appointment with us.

In some cases, your extended health insurance plan may require a referral from your family doctor, but many do not. It may be wise to check first.
How long are appointments?
Appointments are 50 minutes.
We offer individual therapy sessions, youth (14-17) therapy, and couples therapy.
